In the middle of the mountain range in the West part of the island of Sumatera lies a Matriarchal society that produces beautiful weaving made out of silk and gold or silver threads well known as Songket. The homeland of the Minangkabau people are blessed with fertile soil and geographic location,  makes this area frequently visited by many merchants from China, India, Middle East and later from Europe.

The Minangkabau people are very open to new ideas, and soon they incorporate the visitor's design and ideas into their weaving.  This incorporation of the original design and new design creates beautiful and unique Songket that we know today.
